Monster Zoku Onsomb! - 2009 - Earth Eaters

Genre: Breakcore, Monster Electro Shit, B-Movie/Horror Lounge
Label:
DEATH$UCKER REC. (UK)

I am not that fan of posting the newest records, but this project need some more attention!
See their Website for Tourdates and the Remix Project. Go to their shows, it's fun!!!
The Monsters third full length release is certainly not for genre purists. To create EARTH EATERS, MZO have moved beyond just splicing and dicing samples and mashups, with Miss P. Leisure securing the mic and creating a new sound using the very strangest of vocal effects. They still retain their samplistic roots with plenty of bashment & retrodelic rollers, but add super futuristic basslines, beats which are unrelenting and lyrics about body implants, circuit bending and dancing in the nude to create the sound that is uniquely their own.

Put simply, MZO bring the party to any planet of sound that you happen to inhabit.

Anubian Lights - 1998 - Let Not The Flame Die Out, 2001 Naz Bar

Genre: Space Rock, 60ies Agent&Spy Lounge Soundtrack, Ambient Electronica, Dance
Label:
Hypnotic/Cleopatra (US), Crippled Dick Hot Wax (GER)

For the 100th post I've got something ehm special... not really, but it's my alltime fave. 10 years ago this retro-space-age revival was in full bloom. These „lounge sounds“, sampled sixties tunes mixed with some light beats, where played everywhere. Anubian Lights started as these traditional Space Rock projects in Hawkwind tradition, but turned to the light weight chilling tunes. Both records are the best. A cool mixture of space rock, pure sequencer electronics, some techno/electronic/breakbeats, sampled sixties tunes, spacey synths and grooves. Check it, it's fun!

Monster Zoku Onsomb! - 2007 - Attack!, 2004 s/t

Genre: Psychobilly Breakcore,Dance
Label:
Rats Milk (AUS)

After the bunch of psych posts, some Psychobilly Breakbeat Fun Stuff. A collective from Australia with an amazing stageshow full of that B-Movie Horror shit and Rock'n'Roll tunes smashed and mashed, cutted and pasted with dancable Breakbeats.
Sampling anything from 50’s rockabilly, lounge to ragga and noise, MZO combine eclectic sampling with fat synths to create a hybrid sound all their own. From punk gigs to drum n bass. Lounge shows to breakcore. House to experimental, and from electro clash to rockabilly …MZO destroys them all… … Someone said MZO sounded like: “Techno Jungle Sixties Hardcore Punk from Outa Space! ” … Someone else said : “Mental ragga rave n bass with zigzag bass lines and the kind of free spirited abandon guaranteed to ram a dance floor in 10 seconds flat! ”

Genre: Psychedelic Rock, Prog Rock

Nice classic Psych/Prog-Rock, with that typical heavy guitars and organlines. The last track is more far away from that Prog Rock Sound because it sounds like the german NEU! and that is really refreshing beside that oldschool sound.

The Balustrade Ensemble - 2007 - Capsules

Genre: Steampunk Ambient, Neo Folk, Electronica
Label:
Dynamophone (US)

Very nice soundscapes, some kind of victorian ambient. The Soundtrack for Good Friday. Enjoy!

An otherworldy collection of adroitly-crafted pieces of dense, acoustic guitar pickings, mellotron, orchestron, claviola, cello, piano, pedal steel, and voice (Wendy Allen). Delicate and sometimes spooky, Capsules is like the lost soundtrack to a Brothers Quay film, a collection of lovely, brittle compositions viewed through a hazy, antique looking-glass.

Volcano The Bear - 1999 - The Inhazer Decline

Genre: Avantgarde, Free Folk
Label:
United Diaries (UK)
Similar Artists: Nurse With Wound

Krautrock, Freeform Folk, Freaky, Weird...
When Nurse With Wound's "A Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table.." was first released in 1979, the response was one of bafflement. Volcano The Bear's first album for NWW's United Dairies is just as baffling. Ostensibly following the 70s art-rock damage of Faust (especially 'Tapes') and the willfull eccentricity of The Shadow Ring, Volcano The Bear (Byram refuses to call them anything but BJ and the Bear) plods through disjointed percussive riffs with alien droning, incongruous guitar work, and a crystal clear production which wouldn't be out of place on Too Pure. It's not hard to see why Steven Stapleton sought this group out after their Pickled Egg debut for a United Dairies release.

Droids - 1978 - Star Peace

Genre: Italo Space Disco
Label:
Cherry Red Records
Similar Artists: Aavikko, some 70ies disco music

The first two tracks seems to be the blueprint for Aavikko - Back From The Futer Album or Aavikko in general. That's the soundtrack your parents dance on! yes! Analogue Sequencers and synthswirrls - reminds sometimes on Klaus Schulze and a funky bassline + drums and that's the perfect soundtrack for some retro disco or for a tv documentary from the eighties.
PS: Aavikko new album is out, yhihaaa!

The Birdtree - 2002 - Orchards & Caravans

Genre: Psych Folk, Drone, Psychedelic
Label:
Last Visible Dog (US)
Similar Artists: Skygreen Leopards, Thuja

Well, here again a great piece of work by Glenn Donaldson. If you read this blog, you stumbled often about his music (the last was this Mirza record). His most well known project are The Skygreen Leopards, but he did a lot of work as the one of the heads behind the Jewelled Antler Collective. You can get an overview about that collective with it's own soundcosmos here and here.
This record is a mixture of Glenn Donaldsons music he do with The Skygreen Leopards, more that song oriented folky stuff and the freeform drone-work of Thuja. If you like their work, check it!
The Jewelled Antler Collective put out a lot recordings, mostly on CD-r, so they are rare - if you like to share some of this stuff, please post comments. Thank you!

Volcano The Bear - 2007 - Amidst The Noise And Twigs

Genre: Psychedelic, Free Folk
Label:
Beta Lactam Ring Records (US)
Similar Artists: Grizzly Bear, but on a weird mushroom trip!, Hochenkeit

If all the * Bear bands are cuties and sweeties, this bear will abduct you in a cave inside really deep and dark woods. Volcano the Bear are from Lancaster UK and released on Steve Stapeltons Label United Diaries. That should give you a direction, if not, imagine dark folky soundscapes and surreal ritual music with flutes, horns, percussion and mutiple voices.
The Three Twins close the album and maybe this is your escape from that cave. Play Loud!

Who knew that amidst the noise and the twigs there was music…sweet, sweet music?! This world is Volcano the Bear’s womb. At last, the year that VTB gets a shot at Top Of The Pops, assuming the pops finally snaps out of its vapid trance and embraces the standards of Comus, 3 Hurel, early Residents and 12th century Arabo-Andalusian music. As usual, our heroes are found keeping things stripped to the bone trumpet, but dripping with a juicy, melodic marrow. The record pours slowly and resolutely like a folk-psych dream urn, loaded with full metal banjoes; crumhorns at 12 O’clock; and autoharps at defcon 5. The experimentalism is this time couched in shifting tides of self-spun acidic harvest ballads that noisily well up into proto-Kraut thrums and tribal night trips around the pyre. A rural, squelchy, DIY delicacy which stinks of occidental embouchure so crystal crisp that every skkrrrr, pphaaapph and brrruuuummmm resonates like a small, sound-specific god, intertwined with beautifully skewed notes, voices and rhythms. "Amidst The Noise And Twigs" plays like a recently discovered field recording of some obscured Celtic clan who accidentally stumbled onto psychedelia 600 years ahead of its time. These pipers truly rock the gates of dawn.

Mirza - 1997 - Anadromous

Genre: Free Form Psych Rock, Space Rock
Label:
Darla Records (US)
Similar Artists: Hochenkeit, Ash Ra Temple

Mirza is a Free-Form-Psych Rock group with members of Thuja and Skygreen Leopards (Glenn Donaldson).
Trippy Improvisations reminds on german Krautrock stuff like Ash Ra Temple and similar, check it out! More Information
Mirza, which means "royalty" in Persian, are a San Francisco quartet who play ghostly instrumental psychedelic sounds. This is their debut. It's like Magic Hour or Bardo Pond, if either of the aforementioned were from India. Perhaps they are the paisley side Rodan never had. The music is like lying on the grass in Golden Gate Park & watching the sun filter through the big evergreens while Jefferson Airplane blast away at an electric love raga with Ravi Shankar.

Danielson Family - 1997 - Tell Another Joke at the Ol' Choppin' Block

Genre: christan freak folk/indie
Label: Secretly Canadian
Similar Artists: Danial Johnston, CYHSY, The Polyphonic Spree

It's like the post before, christian related indie music (that means nothing). I like the quirky music, I like the weird falsetto singing and the psychedelic parts. It's fun!
Daniel's quirky songwriting and the family teamwork may prompt references to the Shaggs, but musically the Famile is far more accomplished. Being devout Christians, there are religious undercurrents to every track. Make no mistake, though, because these folks are miles from the stuff that comes to mind whenever you hear the words 'contemporary Christian music.' Their sound lies closer to the Pixies or They Might Be Giants. Daniel regularly sings his unique lyrics in a shocking falsetto that sometimes recalls Black Francis, Jad Fair, and Daniel Johnston.
