Alex Fergusson - 2006 - The Castle

Genre: Folk, Pop, Psych, Post Punk
Label:
Eis & Licht (DE)

Here's the follower of the previous post. Alex Fergusson with his latest record. Very different styles are here. Opens with a sinister classic piece followed by the great post punk track "Dark Angel" (this seems to be the connection to his former group Alternative TV). Then "Ways of Pleasure" and "Hope" sounds like a pure Velvet Underground Jam, "Odyssey" is an instrumental with backward sounds in vein of his Psychic TV times. And beween these remarkable songs pretty nice folk songs - sometimes with female vocals.
It's a bit strange that he release on these gothic/industrial labels, but that's maybe the connection - the music has nothing to do with that neo european attitudes and shit.

We Are Wolves - Non-Stop Je Te Plie En Deux (2005), Total Magique (2007)

Genre: Post-Punk/Rock, Space Rock
Label:
Dare To Care (CAN)

Energic Post Punk with heavy analogue synthie/organ, a bass player and a drummer. No guitar needed! Superb!
A gang of three, four including rock. We are Wolves imposes a music that's both free and honest, like the celestial lightning on the mystic mountain. It's a post-punk landscape filled with analogue trees. It's like rock after the post-modern explosion.

The 63 Crayons - Spoils For Survivors (2007)

In former days The 63 Crayons playing some kind of sixties influenced Indie-Pop, always with some spacey synth swirls. With their last album they add a The in front of their name and go into a more darker, danceable, more psychoactive direction. Revolution Fight Song, reminds in the drumming style on of Montreal (and The 63 Crayons are from Athens, Georgia too ;-), Devils is a dark floating number. Save us kicks you completly out of this world. This is a perfect space trip and the bouncing beat in style of The Can Drummer Jaki Liebezeit show their roots in some ways. (There is a bit longer version named Heal us on a compilation called „Death Before Distemper 2). This is a really great record! Dancing don't Trust!

My Teenage Stride - Lesser Demons (2008)

Genre: Post-Punk, Indie Pop
Label: ?! itunes only?

The opener of this digital EP is maybe some of the catchiest thing you've ever heard. (maybe not ;-)). My Teenage Stride play some nice Indie Pop and have their roots in 80ties Post-Punk, but with much more fun.
“Theme From Teenage Suicide” may be the best song the band has ever written: it’s bracing and breathless and sarcastic and has the kind of hook that you remember after only one go-round. All five of these songs are winners, from the haunted mansion rattle of “The Loud Confessor” to the hyper-pop of “Skin Lieutenant.” I have a tendency to get very “rah! rah! rah!” about bands I love, but My Teenage Stride is clearly a band that is going somewhere. Lesser Demons finds them speeding along even faster. Pure pop bliss! Seriosuly: try “Theme From Teenage Suicide.” SOLID GOLD. ~ Joe Keyes, 17 Dots
